I recently decided to buy a new television.The thought of buying a new telelvion hadn't crossed my mind since the last time I purchased one... in 2007. This has nothing to do with what I wanted to write about, but I had no idea how inexpensive televisions have become. I decided on a 55 inch 1080 HD tv... I see no use for 4K. This was all so exciting not just because I was getting a new, larger television... but because this meant I had the chance to see some of my favorite films bigger and clearer than ever!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That being said, the first film I decided to watch was 1957's <i>Funny Face</i>. It has always been one of my favorites. Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Kay Thompson, fashions by Edith Head, visuals by Richard Avedon, tunes by <span class="st">George Gershwin... what more could you ask for? Oh yeah... and to top it off it is a musical that centers around the fashion & photography business, two of my favorite things on this planet. This film may have been made 30 years before I was even a thought in my parents mind, but it was made for me. Believe it or not... it was.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hYkKT_yOrYA/WPV9duPW5DI/AAAAAAAABZU/E43Ck6jp1VAMrWqGv3FFKvurBUuJeSqZgCLcB/s1600/funnyface.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hYkKT_yOrYA/WPV9duPW5DI/AAAAAAAABZU/E43Ck6jp1VAMrWqGv3FFKvurBUuJeSqZgCLcB/s1600/funnyface.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="st"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="st">Look at me, getting off topic again. The whole meaning behind this post is simple. I have seen this film more times than I can remember, but watching it in full HD made it feel like I had never seen it before. So there I am, laying on the sofa, watching the movie... and BAM! Out of the blue (no pun intended), I am hit with Kay Thompson's striking teal colored eye shadow. Beautifully winged. Beautiful in tone. Simply beautiful. Most people comment on Audrey's makeup in this film, let's not get started on those eyebrows, but if you pass Kay's look over, that would be a mistake. From that moment every scene she was in was stolen by her eye makeup. It was all I could look at. I do not know how I didn't notice it before, but thanks to this new television... I look forward to finding details I never noticed before in all of my favorite films.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="st">Side Note: Unfortunately, I can not find a single good photo of Kay in the film to show her teal fantasy... you'll just have to look out for it next time you watch the film. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

I still find it hard to believe that there is a top notch television show during prime time that focuses on two of my favorite actresses of all time! I've always been a huge fan of Ryan Murphy because he created Glee and American Horror Story, but he blew me away with this creation. I haven't been this excited about a television show since Smash. I believe Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are doing an amazing job as Joan and Bette. They get a thumbs up from me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This past week's episode focused on the 1963 Academy Awards and what would be a huge turning point in the career of both ladies. I was so pleasantly surprised to see them include Bette's December 1962 appearance on the Andy Williams show where she sang "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane." Susan really did her homework here because the movements and the accents in her voice were spot on. To top it off, the way the show recreated the awards evening all the way down to the monologue just made my little Old Hollywood loving heart melt.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I want to give two thumbs up to Ryan Murphy and his team for bringing this to life. Let's hope this will get audiences interested in looking a little deeper into the careers of these two amazing woman. It isnt all about wire hangers and places looking like dumps. A life without witnessing the magic that is Joan Crawford and Bette Davis is a life I would never want to lead.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I found these two side by side comparison on YouTube... just in case you haven't been watching.</div>

Lana O'Day, that name probably doesn't ring a bell to anyone reading this blog, but to me it represents a huge part of my life. Lana O'Day is my drag persona. For the last 3.5 years I have been fortunate to build a character based on all of my favorite things from past and present. Not only that, but I have been fortunate enough to have that persona become respected in the LGBT community of New Orleans... and beyond. It is definitely not something I ever thought I would do, but has become the perfect outlet for my creativity and my need to entertain.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In November of 2015, I was gearing up to host a talent contest that was to be apart of the Faux Real Festival at Bar Redux in New Orleans. I was contacted by David Lee Simmons of <a href="https://popsmartnola.com/" target="_blank">Pop Smart Nola</a> about writing a little entry for his website about my top 5 drag moments in the movies. How could I pass that up? In between clients at work, I wrote out the first ideas that came to my mind. It was a fun experience and I decided to share what I wrote here for y'all to read. You can find the original post on David's website <a href="https://popsmartnola.com/2015/11/04/lana-odays-top-5-drag-inspirations-heading-into-fridays-little-miss-sunshine-of-the-bywater/" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
1. Some Like It Hot</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
If you haven't seen this film, you need to have your head checked! You've got Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon cross dressing in an all girls band to hide out from the mob and you've got Marilyn Monroe! What else could you want or need?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The scene that has always stuck out in my head is the train scene where we are first introduced to Daphne and Josephine (Tony and Jack). They are trying to walk in heels and look feminine, but they just can't get it. And than it cuts to the voluptuous blonde bombshells herself... Marilyn Monroe who struts passed the fellas and shows them how it's done. Daphne's quote puts it all into perspective... "<i>Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It's like Jell-O on springs. Must have some sort of built-in motor or something. I tell you, it's a whole different sex!</i>"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fbQqnJw7xL0/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fbQqnJw7xL0?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
2. Tu Wong Fu, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This one is pretty obvious. A film about drag queens in the 90's was taboo. Throw in top film stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes and you've got a recipe for fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The opening scene to this film is one of my favorites of all the films I've ever seen. It starts with Salt N Peppa asking "where is the body?", then the beats drops and it cuts to Vita and Noxema getting ready for a night on the town. There's eyelashes, huge powder puffs, girdles, stockings, wigs, gowns... oh my! I was hooked from the first time I saw this... in elementary school! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And of course Noxema schooled us on what exactly a drag queen is... "<i>When a straight man puts on a dress and gets his sexual kicks, he is a transvestite. When a man is a woman trapped in a man's body and has a little operation he is a Transsexual. When a gay man has way too much fashion sense for one gender he is a drag queen. And when a tired little Latin boy puts on a dress, he is simply a boy in a dress</i>!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hKZ9um4SRnA/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hKZ9um4SRnA?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
3. The Little Mermaid</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Yes, even Disney has its fair share of connections with the cross dressing community. After all, the best villain and my favorite sea witch Ursula was modeled after the one and only... Divine! From her high arched eyebrows to her large red lips, Ursula just screams QUEEN! She is vicious and knows what she wants! She will step on anyone who gets in the way... even the skinny pretty girl. Sounds like a queen to me! "<i>And don't underestimate the importance of body language!</i>"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Ooq4beNsM2Q/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ooq4beNsM2Q?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
4. Victor Victoria</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Words can not express how much I love this film! You've got Mary Poppins... yes Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) playing a woman who can't get a job as an entertainer dressing as a man who entertains as a cross dresser. Mind blown right? It's like cross dressing inception! The story line deals with men questioning their sexuality, equal rights for women, and a whole lot of amazing musical numbers. Everyone has seen the Le Jazz Hot scene right? No? Than why are you reading this? It's so good even Glee had to remake it... that means you've made it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/BdJPAptAa5I/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BdJPAptAa5I?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
5. Jayne Mansfield</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Ok, so technically, Jayne Mansfield isn’t a movie, but she is the definition of camp, glamour and drag. To put it simply, Jayne Mansfield was Vera Jayne Palmer’s drag persona. Jayne learned early on what she needed to do to be successful and get attention. Jayne Mansfield was over the top, gaudy, and a caricature of a glamorous woman. She wore revealing gown, big hair, big lashes, and even had a pink house. Like the entire house was pink and furry. If that isn’t a drag queen’s doing I don’t know what is. Jayne talents shine best in her two most popular films: ‘The Girl Can’t Help It’ and ‘Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?’ Many stars in Old Hollywood created personas that they would play on screen and in public. Jayne Mansfield’s persona just happened to be that of a drag queen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/U709IQNSirc/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U709IQNSirc?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I hope you guys enjoyed reading this... I had a lot of fun putting it together last year.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I watch a film from this period, the costumes get as much attention from me as the actors do. In many films, the costume design is the much needed icing on the cake to give these films that little something extra. It just goes to show you that the designers of that period were much more important than they may have known. Not only did they lend their hand in the productions of the films, they also had a lasting touch on the world of fashion. Many of their designs can be seen influencing fashions that are hip today. Below are my top 10 gowns of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Ok let's be honest, who could narrow it down to 10, so here are 10 of my favorites. It is probably no surprise how many times Edith Head pops on on the list...</div>

Before Marilyn Monroe became known as THE blonde bombshell of the 1950's she was gracing the pages of magazines, advertisements, and calendar across the world as Norma Jeane. She was discovered in a factory during the war and luckily for us David Conover saw that magic in her eyes.</div>

Walking into Barnes and Noble and seeing a new Marilyn Monroe book sitting on the shelves is always an exciting day for me! Especially if I had no idea the book was coming out. This is a beautiful boo full of photos and information about Marilyn Monroe's beginnings. You learn about her time at The Blue Book Modeling Agency, and information behind her modeling gigs. Astrid Franse and Michelle Morgan did a wonderful job putting this book together. It is quite and amazing read! You can find it online <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/before-marilyn-astrid-franse/1121780669?ean=9781250085900" target="_blank">here.</a></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is just something about the blonde bombshells of Old Hollywood that always spark my interest. Hollywood thought they had found another Marilyn Monroe when Jayne Mansfield busted (pun totally intended) on to the scene, but Jayne was a completely different animal. Aside from having blonde hair and a knock out figure... the two stars couldn't be farther from each other. Jayne Mansfield was over the top, larger than life... dare I say campy? That's just what made me so interested in her. She knew exactly what she wanted and what she needed to do to get it. She used her 'obvious talents' to make a name for herself. She knew what Hollywood expected of her... so she gave it to them. </div>

Jayne started out her career as Hollywood's newest, hottest blonde bombshell, but even with her successes on the big screen, Jayne wasn't earning what she thought was a fair salary... only earning $2,500 a week from the studio. Lucky for her, she was in demand outside of Hollywood. She was able to capitalize on her popularity by turning her sex symbol reputation into a lucrative stage career. She took her 'satire on striptease' every where from Las Vegas to North Carolina to Mississippi.</div>

On February 12th, 1958, fresh off their honeymoon, Jayne and new husband Mickey Hargitay made their debut in the 4 week run of 'Tropicana Holiday' at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. The show took place in the world famous resort's show room called 'The Theater Restaurant' which sat 450 people for dinner and was produced by Monte Proser. Jayne played Trixie Divoon in the original musical composed by Gordon Jenkins that sported a 50 piece orchestra led by Nat Brandwynne. The show's opening night helped raise $20,000 for the March of Dimes. What a change of pace this must have been for the blonde bombshell. She was now earning $25,000 a week to appear in front of sold out crowds, and on top of that the Tropicana was footing the bill for her & her family's living expenses. They even took out a $1 million dollar insurance policy on Jayne because of the risky acrobatic moves she and Mikey were performing during the show. 'Tropicana Holiday' ended on March 19th, 1958, but it wouldn't be long until she was back on the Vegas strip.</div>

On May 14th, 1959, Jayne & Mickey were back at the Tropicana for a 4 week reboot of their successful stage show, now titled 'The Tropicana Hotel Nightclub Revue.' The show was again a success, selling out every night. This time it wasn't the acrobatic stunts she and Mikey were performing on stage, it was Jayne's costume... or the lack of shall I say. It was so shocking it made the news. The papers described the gown as a barbed wire fence and wrote, "it protects the property but doesn't obstruct the view." The gown was made of a sheer nylon fabric with strategically placed sequins & stones to cover her lady parts and had half a dozen petticoats that were worn at the knee. Jayne told the press, "I designed it myself. I wanted to be completely covered. If I had tried to compete with the nudes on their own grounds it would have been in bad taste. And besides, those girls are not as healthy as I. They have been through a war and all that hardship."</div>

On December 29th, 1960 Jayne and Mickey continued their successful stage act at The Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas with their striptease revue, 'The House of Love.' The show took place in the Dunes' state of the art restaurant/showroom, was produced by Jack Cole, written by Sid Kuller (who also wrote for Jack Benny) and featured Bill Reddie and his orchestra. Jayne was earning $35,000 per week, which was a career high for the actress. The show sold out every out every night. Seems like people were really interested in seeing Mickey twirl Jayne above his head... or maybe they wanted to get a peek at that infamous barely there gown. Yes, Jayne brought THAT gown with her over to The Dunes. The 8 week engagement ended on February 27th, 1962, but the show was such a big hit 20th Century Fox had another idea to capitalize off Jayne's success. In 1962, 20th Century Fox Records released 'Jayne Mansfield Busts Up Las Vegas' featuring the actresses music numbers from 'House of Love.'</div>

From September 1st through September 18th 1966 'Jayne Mansfield's Nightclub Revue' took to the stage of the Fremont Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Jayne was flying solo this time as she sang, danced, joked, and even sat on the audiences laps.</div>

By the mid 60's, Jayne's film career was on a downward spiral and work was few and far between. Jayne resorted to doing small gigs at clubs much less glamorous than the Tropicana and The Dunes. It seemed Jayne was willing to show up anywhere if you had her $10,000 appearance fee. You could find her from supermarket promotions to drug store openings. Her final public appearance was in Biloxi, Mississippi at Gus Stevens Seafood Restaurant & Buccaneer Lounge. It was on this late night drive to New Orleans that the tragic car accident happened that ended the star's life.</div>

Last week, I went on a mini shopping spree online. I was feeling some kind of way and looked to my credit card to feel better. Needless to say, I now have quite a few new Classic Hollywood goodies in my collection. One of those items is The Jayne Mansfield DVD Collection. I've had this book marked for who knows how long. Amazon gets you with those 'Only 4 left in stock!' things... well they got me at least. This set includes 'The Girl Cant Help It' (1956), 'The Sheriff With The Fractured Jaw' (1958), and the film this post is about... 'Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?' (1957).</div>

<h4 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The Story:</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Jayne Mansfield teams with Tony Randall in this hilarious spoof about an ad man who nabs a movie star for his campaign -- and opens a can of worms in the process. Ad writer Rockwell Hunter (Randall) thinks he's hit the jackpot when sexy starlet Rita Marlowe (Mansfield) agrees to endorse a line of lipstick he's touting. But when the press mistakes the business partnership for an affair, it'll take some tricky maneuvers to set the story straight. <h4 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My Favorite Scene:</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is a hard one because I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this film. I haven't literally lol'd during a film in quite some time. If I have to narrow it down to just one scene, I will have to go with the scene where Betsy Drake's character Jenny Wells is imitating the 'oh so kissable' Rita Marlowe. Prior to this scene, she stopped into a lingerie store to buy new under garments to get the shape of Marlowe. So when we first see her in the next scene, her bosoms are pointed to the sky and her waist of non existent. And if that wasnt enough, she does a spot on impersonation of Rita's voice and squeal. I was cracking up more each time she opened her mouth. Bravo!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QAwpm51vVnY/VgXuhDrRgaI/AAAAAAAABSQ/WX8fFjm28YI/s1600/tumblr_nezpddamb91sv3q7co1_1280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QAwpm51vVnY/VgXuhDrRgaI/AAAAAAAABSQ/WX8fFjm28YI/s1600/tumblr_nezpddamb91sv3q7co1_1280.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Trivia and Tidbits:</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Jayne Mansfield originated the role of Rita Marlowe in the Broadway play that ran 444 performances at the Belasco Theatre in New York from 1955-1956.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Jayne Mansfield's character Rita Marlowe's name was a combination of 3 of my favorite Classic Film actresses... <b>Rita</b> Hayworth, Jean H<b>arlow</b>, and Marilyn <b>M</b>onr<b>oe</b>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The films that Rita Marlowe 'stars' in are actually films Jayne Mansfield starred in prior to this film being made... "<i>The Girl Can't Help It</i>" (1956), "<i>Kiss Them for Me</i>" (1957) and "<i>The Wayward Bus</i>" (1957).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
If you didn't catch it, the film pokes a little bit of fun at fellow blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. Rita Marlowe leaves Hollywood abruptly for New York for some personal time and to form her own production company... as Monroe did that same year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Tony Randall was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actor – Musical/Comedy for his work on this film.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In 2000, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My Thoughts:</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<i>'Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?'</i> set out with one goal in mind... to satire pop culture, Hollywood hype and the ad industry. From it's over the top heartthrob obsessed teen mobs to it's celebrity driven culture... I believe it achieved just that. Let's be honest... this film's message is just as relevant today, 60 years later, than it was in 1957.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Tony Randall was so loveable and such a joy to watch. He had such a great timing for comedy. Joan Blondell snuck up on me as Rita Marlowe's assistant... forgot how wonderful she is! Jayne Mansfield was so likable and so full of that 'it' factor that you can't look away when she is on screen. I don't know about you, but I could listen to that woman talk for hours... and do not get me started on that squeal... it is everything!</div>

I first heard Julie London's beautiful, sultry voice a few years ago while watching the Jayne Mansfield/Tom Ewell film '<i>The Girl Can't Help It</i>.' Since that time, I find myself going back to discover more of her music. Up to now it has just been listening through You Tube, but I reached a point last week where I wanted more than what I could find on there. I found that her entire discography is available on iTunes... but with 29 studio albums under her belt, I wasn't able to spend almost $300.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yfMSYwYbiaE/VgI1mZ5iARI/AAAAAAAABRs/vL5Mcn-TYgg/s1600/julielondon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yfMSYwYbiaE/VgI1mZ5iARI/AAAAAAAABRs/vL5Mcn-TYgg/s400/julielondon.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That is... until I saw the great deal Amazon had on physical copies of her albums. I was able to get 17 of her albums for just under $50 with free shipping... thanks Amazon Prime! So maybe I wasn't able to get all 29, but I made a pretty good dent in collecting them all. I am still in need of 'Love on the Rocks', 'Latin in a Satin Mood', 'The End of the World', 'The Wonderful World of Julie London', 'Julie London',<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>'Feeling Good', 'For the Night People', 'Nice Girls Don't Stay for Breakfast', 'With Body & Soul', 'Easy Does It', and 'Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.'</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you haven't discovered the music of this talented song bird... you're missing out!</div>

As I sat here making a new banner for Blame Mame, Julie London's beautiful, sultry version of "Cry Me A River" came pouring through of my speakers. There is something about her voice that takes you to that place of relaxation. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This torch song was originally written for Ella Fitzgerald for the 1955 film <i>Pete Kelly's Blues</i>, but was later dropped from the film. Julie recorded her version in 1955 on Liberty Records with Barney Kessel on guitar and Ray Leatherwood on bass. The song became a huge hit after being featured in the 1956 Rock 'n' Roll film <i>The Girl Cant Help It</i> starring Tom Ewell and Jayne Mansfield. </div>

This past Friday, I was over at a friends house after dinner and we decided to watch a film on Netflix. Some of my favorites were being suggested to us (Mean Girls, Clueless, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion), but I was in the mood for some Old Hollywood. As soon as 'Funny Face' popped up, I knew that was what I wanted to see. Luckily for me, my friend is pretty easy going and was down to watch it for the first time. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I said I have seen the movie a few times that would be a lie because I've probably seen it 20-30 times. Having seen this film that many times, I wasn't prepared for what was coming. The version of the film that was on Netflix has been remastered into HD. It was like watching it for the first time. Audrey, Fred, and Kay popped off the screen. The vibrsnt colors of the costumes and movie sets looked so beautiful and fresh. If you love this film, it is definitley worth while to check this out in Full HD.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I mentioned in my review of 1953's <i>Call Me Madam</i>, I was able to catch a couple of films during TCM's celebration of the Best Costume Design during their <b>31 Days of Oscar</b> programming. The second film was 1954's <i>It Should Happen To You</i> starring Judy Holliday, Peter Lawford, and Jack Lemmon. I really hadn't planned on watching this one, but when I saw it starred Judy Holliday I had to because I found her so charming in 1954's <i>Phffft</i>.</div>

<b>The Story:</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gladys Glover has just lost her modelling job when she meets filmmaker Pete Sheppard shooting a documentary in Central Park. For Pete it's love at first sight, but Gladys has her mind on other things -- like making a name for herself. Through a fluke of advertising she winds up with her name plastered over 10 billboards throughout city. Suddenly all of New York is clamoring for Gladys Glover without knowing why and playboy Evan Adams III is making a play for Gladys that even Pete knows will be hard to beat. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>My Favorite Scene:</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I found myself giggling a few times throughout this film, which doesn't happen very often. There is a scene where Pete bursts into Gladys' room to express his displeasure for how she has spent her saved money on this billboard. He goes on and on tearing down her actions and is just about to leave the room (which seams like for good) when he turns around to make sure their date is still on for the upcoming Friday. The perfect comedic timing of both leads was on display in this scene.</div>

<b>Trivia and Tidbits:</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was the film debut of Jack Lemmon, which is hard to believe because he plays this role like he had been doing it his whole life. He was such a gifted comedian. The on location scenes were shot during a 10-day shoot in New York City in July 1953.</div>

<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>My Thoughts:</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wasn't expecting much from this film about an out of work model who buys a billboard to put her name on it, but I was proven wrong. The film is full of heart and teaches you a very valuable lesson: Don't let your successes and fame make you forget who is important in your life because they mean nothing if you don't have someone to share it with.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today, as a part of their <b>31 Days of Oscar</b> programming, TCM was celebrating past nominees of the Best Costume Design category. Being stuck in bed not feeling well, I decided to check out a couple of the films. First up was the 1953 film <i>Call Me Madam</i>. Up until now, I had seen Ethel Merman in only one other film (1954's <i>There's No Business Like Show Business</i>), so I was excited to see what she had to offer. Having Donald O'Connor, Vera-Ellen, and George Sanders along for the ride also sweetened the deal.</div>

<b>The Story:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sally Adams is a social butterfly whose hobby of knowing everyone of value in Washington, D.C., pays off when she's chosen to serve as United States Ambassador to the fictional country of Lichtenburg. Once settled in her new position, she strikes up a romance with the country's smooth foreign minister, Cosmo Constantine, and her assistant Kenneth catches the eye of Princess Maria. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>My Favorite Scene:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hands down my favorite scene(s) were when we were treated to the beautifully choreographed dances between Donald O'Connor and Vera'Ellen. That being said it was at the royal party where Kenneth and Princess Maria dance in the garden that has to take the top spot. I was mesmerized by Maria's dress every time she spun. The way it flowed and spun around was beautiful and graceful. This pairing was on point because they complimented each other so well.</div>

For almost 20 years the film was withdrawn from exhibition because Fox's music rights had expired. It wasn't until 2004 when the film was released on DVD that it was seen again. Something I didn't know prior to viewing this film was that Vera-Ellen suffered from anorexia, which is why most of her costumes in the film were designed to cover her neck because it was thin and pre-maturely wrinkled. Prior to this film Ethel Merman originated her role on Broadway from 1950-1952 in 644 performances.</div>

<b>My Thoughts:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've yet to see an Irving Berlin film I didn't enjoy. Even if the story isn't up to par, the musical numbers always make up for that. This film isn't one of those because this film was quite charming. From the exquisite singing from the entire cast (this was George Sanders only full musical film) to the double love story lines, I couldn't look away from the screen.</div>
